How do you feel about the integration of technology in the classroom? What role should it play in our students' education?

The integration of technology in the classroom is essential in today’s education system, but it must be implemented thoughtfully to maximize its benefits while minimizing distractions. I support the Lake Travis ISD School Board's decision to ban cell phones in the classroom for the 2024-2025 school year. This policy allows us to preserve classroom environments focused on engagement, creativity, and face-to-face interactions rather than being disrupted by the constant pull of notifications and social media.

Technology plays a crucial role in equipping students for the modern world. Tools like interactive learning platforms, coding programs, and access to online resources prepare our students for the challenges of the 21st century. However, I firmly believe that technology should be used as a tool to enhance learning, not replace the foundational ways that children naturally learn and grow.

As a strong advocate of Waldorf education principles, I know that children build deeper connections to concepts when they use their hands to learn. Arts, music, and movement create a multi-sensory experience that fosters critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. Whether through painting, playing an instrument, or engaging in physical activities, these experiences are vital to a child’s development and create well-rounded, confident learners.

While technology can enhance education, it should complement—not replace—hands-on learning. For example, using digital tools to create music or design art can coexist with traditional methods like playing instruments or painting. Striking this balance ensures that students benefit from both the innovation of technology and the tactile, creative experiences that build a strong foundation for lifelong learning.

By maintaining this balance, Lake Travis ISD can create a learning environment that prepares students for the future while also nurturing their curiosity, creativity, and connection to the world around them. The thoughtful integration of technology, coupled with a commitment to arts, music, and movement, ensures our students receive an education that is both modern and holistic.
